"Gentle Wake Up" is not gentle and way too loud

Is anyone having trouble where the gentle wake up is way too loud?

I’ve been having trouble with this for weeks. I set an alarm where it will play radio and very slowly increase over a half hour. However, the volume only has 7 “notches” the lowest level is around 20% volume which is already too loud.

The app won’t let me pick anything lower other than zero and if I do set it to zero it automatically goes right back to 20%

I’ve changed ringtone volume, media volume, alarm, volume, every volume I can dozens of times but the fact always remains that the alarm starts too loud and then gets increasingly louder from there. I have no control over the volume other than to make it louder again.

This is incredibly frustrating as with other apps I can see that my phone is capable of playing at a very low volume and very gradually increasing the volume by small amounts. So I know my phone isn’t the problem.

Hello Ross, what phone do you have, can you please set an alarm in one minute, make it ring for few minutes and then send a bug report to us? Is the satuation with build in ringtones or just with radio? Many thanks for reporting

Hi Petr.

Here is the report number I sent: Sleep Crash report - 20250818 (230795) 36 [Manual error]

My phone is a Pixel 8a.

It is also with ringtones. The main issue I think is that the volume in app only goes up in 7 stages, and the jump from 0 to stage 1 is too big and increase in volume.

Hello Ross,

what we do is: we set the playback volume to zero and then set the Alarm stream volume to maximum - in case of Pixel 8a it is the step 7… then we start to gradually increase the playback volume based on your gentle volume time settings…

In the log I see that we did not even had a chance to touch it so it was still set to zero…

One possible explanation for the issue could be that we play the music in Alarm stream and me mark the sound as type alarm using Android’s metadata for playback… in this case on some devices a some volume strength is enforced by the system… To see if this is the case you can try to go to Settings > Alarms > Dangerous options > Alarm output and try to set it to Force headphones only … this will make the next alarm play trough music scream which is does not affect minimal volume…

If this does not fix the issue… another problem we have seen in the past were some device specific audio output enhancing options in phone settings…

I just tried to force headphones option, and it does allow me now to set the volume to a lower level. I thought this would solve the issue but once the alarm sounds, it does the same thing - the radio starts after about 10 seconds and the volume plays quite loud (much louder than my setting).

Here is another bug report
