When you’re asleep, it’s much more convenient that only turn the phone over, without the need of proximity sensors.
Some other apps (for example AlarmDroid) use the rotation/orientation sensor, because it activates the snooze alarm just by turning the phone over. I did a test this morning, and it works even if you do it in the air and there’s nothing around the phone! It’s a huge advantage because you don’t have to worry about whether the phone is face up or face down; just rotate it 180°.
